The South Korean automakers Hyundai and Kia Motors are in the final stages of freezing their plans for starting manufacturing e-cars in India in line with make in India and green drive initiated by the government of India.
The models under e-mobility may include existing versions of Hyundai, to a new platform for mini SUV and efforts are on to strike a partnership deal with LG for batteries along with options of bringing in their international suppliers to India.
The electric space in India is cluttered with numerous regulatory issues, import tariffs on parts and the South Korean automaker is evaluating the conditions under make in India where the company has to look for possible partners for local sourcing and understanding India-specific conditions for electric vehicles.
The move by Hyundai-Kia to manufacture e-cars in India locally was inevitable as Maruti Suzuki-Toyota combine is very close to launching locally made electric products starting 2020 and M&M and Tata Motors are expanding their e-fleet.
