The race to lead electric cars hots up as carmakers - big or small are rushing to launch electric cars. Over half a dozen electric cars will be launched by Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai India, Tata Motors, MG Motors, and Nissan in the next two years in different segments. Even luxury car manufacturers like Audi, Volvo, and Jaguar Land Rover are pushing the pedal to bring relevant electric cars to India.
Maruti Suzuki plans to launch the electric version of its compact hatchback Wagon R in 2020 and would also be shared with Toyota Kirloskar Motors in India market.
Hyundai Motor India will launch its electric SUV Kona in the 2nd half of 2019 in the price range of Rs.20 to 25 lakhs.
MG Motors which are yet to establish themselves in Indian market has announced that it will bring a small electric SUV 'eZS' toward the end of this year.
Mahindra & Mahindra has planned to bring KUV 100 electric by mid-2019 while Tata Motors will launch premium hatchback Altroz by September 2020.
In the luxury car segment, Jaguar Land Rover will launch its first EV I-Pace in the second half of 2020 while Audi India will bring its first electric Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) e-Tron in India by 2019. The company has advanced the much-awaited launch by a year in view of the significant momentum on electric vehicles and charging infrastructure domestically.
Volvo cars India will bring an electric version of its compact SUV XC40 within 6 months of the global launch which slated by end of this year or early next year.
Industry experts believe that carmakers plan to bring electric vehicles in India is completely in line with government intention to convert 30 percent of the fleet to electric. However, Under FAME-II scheme, there hasn't been any incentives for the personal buyer of electric cars as it has been formed mainly to cater to 55000 electric cars used in commercial vehicles segment. Other than this, carmakers are testing the waters with one or two models in electric vehicle space.
